Sir Francis Lindley Wood was born in 1771, the son of Captain Sir Charles Wood of Bowling Hall, near Bradford, and his wife Caroline Barker, daughter of Thomas Lacon Barker of Otley. He was one of five children, his siblings being Major Henry Wood (1776-1846), who died unmarried; Caroline Wood (1773-1839), wife of William Bousfield; Dorothea Wood (1777-c.1821), wife of Charles Armstrong; and Elizabeth Wood (1778-1845), wife of Edward O’Reilly.

In 1795 he inherited the baronetcy of his uncle, Sir Francis Wood, who had died without issue, becoming 2nd Baronet Wood of Barnsley, Co. Yorks. In 1798 he married Anne, the eldest daughter and co-heir of Samuel Buck of New Granges. The couple had three children together; Charles (1800-1885), later 3rd Baronet Wood and 1st Viscount Halifax; Samuel Francis (1809-1843), who died unmarried; and Anne (d.1863), the wife of J. W. Childers, MP of Cantley, near Doncaster.

Sir Francis served as High Sheriff of Yorkshire between 1814 and 1815. In addition to his estate at Bowling Hall, which he inherited from his father 1782, Sir Francis purchased Garrowby Hall in 1803 and Hickleton Hall in 1828, both in Yorkshire, along with land in Kirby Underdale and Bugthorpe, greatly increasing the family estates.

Sir Francis died in 1846 and his title and estates were inherited by his eldest son Charles.
